Washburn a Tiger
After days of rumors and speculation the Detroit Tigers and Anaheim Angels finally finished a four player deal that sends SP Nate Corenjo,CP Franklyn German,and C Brandon Inge to the Angels for SP Jarrod Washburn."Its always hard to trade away some great young players like Nate,Franklyn,and Brandon."Tigers owner Zackery VanNieuwenhze stated,"And we wouldnt off done this deal,unless we felt that it was for the best of the Detroit Tigers organzation."he said.Washburn,a 30 yr. old lefty,went 10-15,with a 4.43 era for the Angels last season.Washburn's carrer year came in 2002 when he went 18-6 with a 3.14 era.Washburn will battle SP Jason Johnson for the #1 starters role.Corenjo,a 25 yr. old righty,went 6-17,with a 4.64 era in 2003 for the Tigers.Corenjo will head to Anaheim and battle for a spot in the Angels rotation."Nate was the toughest for me to give up in this deal."VanNieuwenhze siad."He had a good year for us last season,and he is still fairly young.In baseball ground ball pitchers are always hard to find,and that makes Nate that much spical."he said.German 24,started 2003 as the Tigers closer before being sent down to Triple A Toledo.For the Tigers he went 2-4 with a 6.04 era,and five saves.German will battle for a spot in the Angels crowed bullpen.Inge,a 27 yr. old,switch hitting backstop has been the Tigers starting catcher for the past three years.In those three years he has proved to be a great defensive catcher,but last season he only hit 2.03 with 8 homers,and 30 rbis.Inge will now battle Jose Molina,and Tom Gregorio for the backup catchers spot in Anaheim."I told Brandon that this organzation was very lucky to have him as a part off it,"VanNieuwenhze said."and that I think he is a real pro.I mean,the way he handled the Pudge sitoulation,I dont know if I could of done that.He just loves to play,and I hate to see him gobut I wish him the best of luck down the line."VanNieuwenhze stated.Washburn didnt have alot to say."Its tuff to wake up and find out that youre not an Anaheim angel anymore."Washburn said."I mean,I came up with that club,and was there for all of the bumps in the road.But,I am looking forward to pitching for the Detroit Tigers and in Comerica Park.Despite the past four or five years, this is still a great baseball city,and a stoyied franchise.I cant wait to go to Lakeland as a Detroit Tiger."he said.While this deal make perfect sense for the Tigers it make almost no sense for Anaheim.All three players that the Angels recived for Washburn will have a hard time making the club.The only good reason for Anaheim to make this deal was the fact that it clears up some salery.VanNieuwenhze made one final statement about the trade."I figured after the Pudge signing that if we could get a legit number one or two starter that we could be considerd conteners.Well,I belive that Jarrod Washburn is a legit number one or two starter....and I will leave it at that."
Tigers get Pudge
Today the Detroit Tigers annouced that they have signed all star catcher Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez to a four year deal worth 40 million dollars.Rodriguez 33,hit 2.97 with 16 homers a year ago for the world champion Marins.The deal also includes a team option for a fifth year.If Pudge is on the DL for more then 35 Games the Tigers can by out his deal.If Pudge gets hurt after 2005 the Tigers can void the deal."I wanted to come hear."pudge stated."I look at this divison and it can be mine.I look at this club and see the Marlins last year,nobody figured to see them win but they did."he said.Owner Zack VanNieuwenhze also was happy about this deal."When ever your able to get a all star player you feel great."he siad."But when you look at our season last year,nobody would of even thought that Rondell White,Fernado Vina,Jason Johnson,And Ivan would even consider Detroit."Pudge will now start behind the plate and likeley bat third.Pudge will wear #7.
Mears gone?
To make room on the 40 man roster the Tigers desinigted pitcher Chris Mears for assingment.Mears can now be claimed off waivers by any team.Mears 26,went 1-3,with a 5.44 era.He also picked up five saves.
